In my artwork I use the human figure to explore elements of our humanity. The work is narrative and the figures are sometimes based on people I know or have heard about and are sometimes invented characters and personalities. I often include allusions to art history, mythology or my own personal history in the works.
I use clay and other mixed media such as wood, collage elements and found objects in my sculptural work, and oil paint, heavily applied and often mixed with collage in my 2-D works. Materials that are texturally rich and expressive help me communicate my feelings about my subjects. The works are often colorful and exuberant, too, and address contemporary concerns such as personal power, sexual politics, loss and fear.
I live and work in Cambridge, Maryland and Alexandria, Virginia. I have a MFA from the University of Maryland and am a recently retired professor of art from Northern Virginia Community College. I have shown my work locally and in many venues elsewhere in the United States and abroad.
